A. Audio ≠ MIDI. You can not record audio onto a software track, only MIDI data. To record Audio, select New Basic Track from the Track menu in versions 1 through 6 of GarageBand, or

New Track in GarageBand version 10 and later, and choose one of the Audio options: New audio Track GarageBand version 10.
