Q. What setting do I need to change so that other programs can play the .band files that GarageBand saves?

A. While not every program supports it, any application that does support Apple's "iLife Preview" option can play and use your .band files. In order to enable this option
open GarageBand's preferences, select the "General" tab, and enable the "Audio Preview" checkbox. This will save a rendered "preview" of each song within your .band file for other software to access.
GarageBand from Apple Computer uses audio loops and MIDI loops in Apple Loops format. It can work with Audio Units plug-ins. Apple Macintosh Compatible FireWire and USB interfaces can be used to connect Audio and MIDI instruments to your Mac, and be recorded into GarageBand.
