A. The early versions of GarageBand only come as part of the iLife suite of software, there used to be no way to buy it separately (and the truth is, if it were sold separately it would, at minimum, cost $50 itself. Much of the cost is in packaging. Apple is able to save money by bundling all those products into a single package).
Amazon currently has iLife at, or below Apple's price
When Apple opened its Mac App Store they released GarageBand version 6 ('11) as a seperate product, and you can purchase and download GarageBand version 6 (’11) by itself for $14.99! (No packaging meant they could pass along the saving to customers). Perhaps even better, GarageBand version 10 has been released as a free download, with an optional $5 in app purchase for addition loops and instruments. NOTE: GBv10 requires Mac OS X 10.9.x as the minimum os, but this too is being made available as a free download.
