Q. Can I install Apple's GarageBand on my Mac if I don't have a DVD drive?
A. The early versions of GarageBand, with it's many support files, is HUGE, several gigs, that's why it comes on a DVD. It would take at least a half dozen CDs to fit all of GB’s components.
You can not install GarageBand without some kind of access to a DVD drive, perhaps an external drive, or by using FireWire Target Mode.
Keep in mind, Macs that didn't originally come with a DVD drive are old, and not likely to run GarageBand well, if at all. If the problem is simply a broken DVD drive then these tips may be worth taking advantage of to get the software onto a machine that meets the minimum System Requirements.
Now that Apple has its Mac App Store you are able to purchase and download GarageBand by itself for $14.99! No optical drive required.
GarageBand version 10 is free to download from the Mac App Store. If you wish to have the complete et of Drummers, Loops, and Instrumrnts, they can be purchased through the GarageBand app for $4.99.
